Swan Song

Swan Song - painted on canvas 90x70cm. Immerse yourself in the ethereal beauty of 'Swan Song', a captivating painting that transcends time and space. Amidst a backdrop of faded hydrangeas, delicately rendered with strokes of muted hues, two bees dance with fervor, their delicate wings a symphony of movement as they seek out the last drops of golden honey. Each petal whispers of memories past, while the bees' dance hints at the fleeting nature of life's sweetest moments. 'Swan Song' invites you to ponder the essence of transience and the timeless allure of nature's bittersweet melodies.

The shine on the canvas in the photos is because I photographed it after the final protective coats of varnish. Contact Windsor Gallery for further details, or to see the painting (03 3660724)

Transience of Life

The Fairy Tern at the top of the painting is critically endangered, and the Puriri Moth once hatched into a moth, only lives for about 48 hours.

The shine on the canvas in the photos is because I photographed it after the final protective coats of varnish.

Pepetuna, the ghost of my ancestors

In this artwork, the elusive Pepetuna, also known as the Ghost Moth, takes center stage, weaving a tale of mystery, spirituality, and connection to the unseen. Endemic to the North Island of New Zealand, the Pepetuna is not merely a moth but a symbol of the ethereal, a creature of the twilight hours that dances between the realms of the living and the spirit world. As dusk descends and darkness envelops the land, the Pepetuna takes flight, its delicate wings shimmering with an otherworldly glow. For generations, the Pepetuna has been regarded as a spiritual messenger, the ghost of an ancestor returning to visit his or her descendants. In Māori culture, its presence is revered, its fluttering form evoking whispers of the past and echoes of the future.

Painted on MDF it is 60x101cm large, and is $3500NZD. Message me for further details.

Seeing our future through our past

In this painting, the delicate balance between beauty and fragility is delicately portrayed, serving as both a tribute to New Zealand's native species and a stark reminder of the irreversible losses already suffered.

At the heart of the canvas a diverse array of endangered animals, bugs, and birds emerge, each a precious gem in the crown of Aotearoa's biodiversity. Among them, the elusive orange-fronted parakeet flutters its vibrant wings, while the elegant white heron stands sentinel in the marshes. The resilient black robin, once teetering on the brink of extinction, now finds sanctuary on this canvas, alongside the majestic kauri snail and the industrious native bees.

Yet, woven into the fabric of this tableau, are the shadows of those lost forever—the haunting memory of the huia's melancholic call, the silent steps of the wondrous Moa, and the whispers of countless other species now mere echoes in the wind.

This painting captures the essence of New Zealand's natural beauty while urging us to confront the stark reality of biodiversity loss. "Seeing Our Future Through Our Past" is more than just a painting; it is a call to action, a plea to honor and protect the precious treasures that remain, lest they too vanish into the annals of history.

This painting is 1000x1200x40mm, painted in acrylics on quality canvas. It has had an isolation coat before being varnished for protection. All photos are taken before varnishing (as it is too hard to get a good photo with varnish on) which is why you see a variation in background colour - it has disappeared after the coats of varnish. $9995NZD. Contact me for further details.
